Founding in Response to a National Crisis (2014)

The genesis of CEPRES International University is deeply rooted in a period of profound adversity. In 2014, Liberia faced an unprecedented health crisis as the Ebola outbreak wreaked havoc across the nation. This catastrophic event starkly revealed the significant deficiencies in Liberia’s healthcare infrastructure and the dire need for specialized training and education in public health. It was within this challenging context that Dr. Mogana S. Flomo Jr., who was then pursuing his Ph.D. in Public Health at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, identified an urgent need for an institution dedicated to addressing these critical gaps. Moved by a profound sense of responsibility and a vision for a better future, Dr. Flomo founded CEPRES in November 2014. Initially established as a training center, its primary objective was to enhance the capabilities of the local healthcare system by providing specialized education in environmental and public health. This initiative was aimed at equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively combat public health challenges, both immediate and future.

Transition to a University (2015)

The journey from a training center to a full-fledged university was marked by both challenges and triumphs. Despite initial resistance and skepticism from established educational institutions regarding its collaborative training model, CEPRES persevered. Recognizing the need for autonomy to fully realize its vision, the center transitioned to an independent institution. By May 2015, CEPRES had officially transformed into CEPRES International University, commencing its inaugural classes with nearly 200 students. This transition was a significant milestone, symbolizing the institution’s commitment to providing comprehensive and direct education.

Recognition and Early Achievements (2015-2016)

A pivotal moment in the university’s history came on February 10, 2015, when CEPRES International University received formal recognition from the Government of Liberia. This endorsement was not merely a formality but a crucial step in legitimizing the university’s operations and establishing its credibility within the educational landscape of Liberia. The subsequent year was marked by another significant achievement: the graduation of its first cohort of students in February 2016. This inaugural graduation ceremony was a momentous occasion that celebrated the culmination of the students’ hard work and dedication. It also served as a testament to the university’s rapid progress and its impact on higher education in Liberia. The graduates, equipped with specialized knowledge and skills, were poised to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the nation at large.

Expansion and Development (2016-Present)

Since its inception, CEPRES International University has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to growth and development. The university has continually expanded its academic programs and enhanced its infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of its students and society. Over the years, CEPRES has graduated over 500 students who have gone on to make significant contributions in the fields of environmental and health sciences.
